Renowned wine connoisseur James Halliday, and his formidable nose (not to mention eyebrows), has recently announced four local Gippsland wineries – Lightfoot & Sons, Bass Phillip, Narkoojee and Dirty Three – among Australia’s best.
Every year, pre-eminent wine writer James Halliday pinpoints the best wines, winemakers and wineries from a pool of several thousand (apparently over 9,000 wines are tasted) in his annual Halliday Wine Companion guide. With categories that include Wine of the Year, Best Value Winery, Winemaker of the Year and Best New Winery, James cherry picks the top producers from a range of criteria to offer a true representation of the nation’s greatest names in wine.
In James’ 2018 guide, Gippsland’s Bass Phillip, Dirty Three, Lightfoot & Sons and Dirty Three wineries all received five-star recommendations as, “outstanding wineries capable of producing wines of very high quality”.
The Halliday Wine Companion also identifies 10 ‘dark horse’ wineries in Australia each year for wineries that show great promise – with Lightfoot & Sons also nailing recognition in this category.
Gippslandia congratulates all the winners and can’t wait to show-off the region’s award-winning drops.
