Given the substantial interest in the Earthworker Cooperative featured in #1, we thought you best know of the Community Energy event happening on Thursday, 23rd of February.
The Earthworker Cooperative’s secretary, Dan Musil, recently got in touch with Gippslandia to let everyone know that there’s a positive community forum on Community Owned Energy Projects happening this Thursday (February 23) in Traralgon.
The organisers are expecting a big crowd to hear international community energy expert Soren Hermansen speak about communities taking control of their own energy production – similar to a more modern version of the SEC, only decentralised and democratic. Please take the time to look at Soren’s project on Samoe – the Fossil Fuel Free Island.
As Dan informed us, “There are nearly 100 communities across Australia who have set-up or are in the process of becoming, ‘energy independent’ by running and owning their own electricity generation. Obviously, this could have big implications for the Latrobe Valley as a power generating centre, but also provide opportunities for communities in Gippsland to establish their own community-owned energy projects.”
Take the time and pique your interest by seeing Soren at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre on Thursday night, and you can catch him speaking as part of the ‘Community Energy Congress’ happening in Melbourne next week.
